Friends honor Carrie Daugherty's memory

Benefit at Barley's this Saturday will raise funds for Emily's Power for the Cure.

<Five years ago a woman who worked at Barley's in the Old City was murdered at her home in Knoxville. Since then, friends of Carrie Daugherty have kept her memory alive. "It was hard to imagine that anything that horrible could happen to someone I knew," Rodney Lee said. Barley's Taproom in the Old City is where Rodney Lee and Erin Morrison met her. "Fun loving and free spirited and just a joy to be around," Rodney Lee said. Erin Morrison said, "We became pretty good friends. We have birthdays one day apart. And was definately not a hard person to be friends with. She was friends with everybody here." Friends set up a collection of photos near Barley's entrance to honor Carrie and remember her life. "A lot of the media had called her the Barley's server who was murdered. And she was in some respect but she was also a niece and a daughter and a friend and a co-worker," Erin said. Five years ago, Carrie was training for a marathon to raise money for an organization to fight childhood cancer. <a href="http://nm3.wbir.com/<http://www.emilyspowerforacure.com/%20originalAttribute=">"Emily's Power for the Cureis named for her niece who died at age two, Emily Ransom. After Carrie's death, her friends decided to take up her crusade. "I felt like the best thing I could do to honor her was to do the work that she would continue to do if she still had the opportunity. I consider it that we speak for those who have no voice," Rodney said. They put together a 5k last month. This Saturday they'll host a benefit at Barley's. And April 27th they will run in the Nashville Rock n Roll half and full marathon. The money raised all goes to Emily's Power For The Cure to help kids with cancer and to carry on what Carrie started. "We just want the world to know what a great world citizen she was. She was truly vested in making people's lives better," Erin said. The people doing this also want to make lives better but they're are not really runners. "I do not run. I only run when chased and now I have to say I run for good causes," Rodney said. That good cause is Emily's Power for the Cure. It's something good Carrie Daugherty supported "We want her to be known for more than her death but for her life," Erin said. The benefit this Saturday at Barley's will feature an art auction and a bachelor auction and two live bands. Last year it raised more that $3,000. <
