LOUDON COUNTY, Tenn. — Anyone near Fort Loudoun Dam in the next few months may see a large crane in the area. The Tennessee Valley Authority said crews are working to replace 14 spillway gate hoists at the dam.
It said on social media that crews only bring out the crane to place the "huge components" on the dam. The crane is placed on a floating barge nearby. Images shared on social media showed it near one of the dam's spillways, with crews inside working to attach new pieces to it.
Work could last as long as seven months, the TVA said.
It also said Fort Loudoun is a popular recreation destination known for bass fishing, boating and birdwatching. Construction of the dam was finished in 1943 and it has four hydroelectric generation units, with a summer capacity of 151 megawatts. It's around 122 feet high and stretches around 4,190 feet across the Tennessee River, the TVA said.
