The Augusta Quarry project at Fort Dickerson Park has closed some entrances as it begins its next construction phase.
The project, including a gateway with stone walls, a paved parking lot, additional landscaping complementing the existing forestry, and infrastructure to support future phases, has caused both the Augusta Avenue and Quarry Lake entrance to close.
Park visitors can still access the park and its trail system through the entrance located at Fort Dickerson Park Gateway off of Chapman Highway.
The open entrance is located at 3096 Fort Dickerson Road.
Located in the Battlefield Loop area of the Urban Wilderness, the 91-foot Fort Dickerson Park features both a Civil War fort and a 350-foot deep quarry. Parks and Recreation Director, Sheryl Ely, said the interest in the quarry has increased, so the renovations are a much-needed next step.
Crews will work through the winter at Augusta Quarry, and by spring native trees, shrubs, and perennials will be planted to enhance quarry. City of Knoxville officials plan to reopen the quarry by spring of 2019 - just in time for swimming season.
