Food City adjusting hours, setting aside first hour of each day for elderly and at-risk customers

Food City is asking people 65 and up and other at-risk customers to shop between 7 a.m. – 8 a.m. to avoid busier shopping periods.

Food City is adjusting its store hours as grocers across the U.S. deal with significantly heightened demand for goods amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Food City said its stores will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. effective Tuesday. It is also setting aside an hour between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. for seniors and others who are at risk, inviting them to shop during that hour to avoid busier shopping periods where they would be at greater risk for exposure.

President Donald Trump asked Americans on Tuesday to avoid overwhelming the supply chain, urging people not to hoard goods and to continue shopping at grocers as they normally would.

"You don’t have to buy so much,” President Trump said. “There’s no need for anybody in the country to hoard essential food supplies.”

The President stressed Monday supermarkets around the country will remain open to meet peak demand.

Several other retailers, such as Walmart, Kroger and Publix, have similarly adjusted hours to ensure they can keep up with demand and restock shelves.
