GAME ON: Token Game Tavern has rare arcade game

There are only two Killer Queen games in the state.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — When you open the door at Token Game Tavern in West Knoxville, you can't miss "Killer Queen."

This large arcade game pits two teams of five against each other in an addictive battle of strategy.

"There's a group of guys that I think only come in to play Killer Queen for hours. They've created their own little area over here. People kind of know them as the 'Killer Queen Guys,'" laughed Courtney Barry, who owns Token Game Tavern with her husband.

Barry said that the game is very social and sometimes team members will switch sides, depending on how the night is going or form their own tournaments.

Each team gets a queen bee while the rest of the players are worker bees. The game ends when a team kills the other's queen three times.

Barry said there are three different ways to win, so it never gets boring.

"The worst is a snail victory. You never see it coming," Barry said.

That's what happens when a worker bee hops on the back of a slow snail moving across the bottom of the screen and manages to ride all the way to their team's basket without getting caught.

Barry said the only other Killer Queen that she knows of in Tennessee is located in Chattanooga.
