JONESBOROUGH, Tenn — The Federal Emergency Management Agency approved nearly $20 million in federal assistance to thousands of Tennessee households following Hurricane Helene.

In a press release Friday, FEMA said it approved $19.9 million in assistance to 6,121 households to cover housing and serious needs assistance. They also extended deadlines in order to get assistance.

The Serious Needs Assistance deadline has been extended to Dec. 1. Homeowners, renters, the self-employed and students have until Jan. 7, 2025 to apply for FEMA assistance and a low-interest disaster loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration.  If you need disaster unemployment assistance, you have until Dec. 2 to apply with the state of Tennessee.

FEMA approved 18 months of temporary housing for homeowners and renters who've had major or significant structural damage from the floodwaters. Assistance is also available if your car was lost or damaged in the storm or if you need legal help.

Disaster Recovery Centers are open in Carter, Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Johnson, Unicoi and Washington counties where you can meet with representatives to answer questions about assistance. Disaster Recovery Centers are open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
