It's a gateway into the town.
At least that's what developer Paul Schaffer says. He and Mike Channel are partners with First Farragut Development.
"Farragut wants to create that type of community area," he said.
Farragut Gateway will be comprised of 12,000 square feet in two separate buildings, with the thought of turning them into offices and restaurants. At the same time, there will be a park area in the development to create a gathering place.
Couple that with the brick design and patio space, and you have the making for a social downtown Farragut in Town Center.
"I've lived in Farragut for 18 years," Schaffer said. "I drive around this corner just about everyday, and looked at this empty building."
The empty building once was the Silver Spoon Cafe, on the corner of Kingston Pike and Campbell Station Road. It's been vacant for several years now. Sitting at such a busy intersection, there's a lot of potential for a development to thrive.
"This area deserves something nice. So we'd like to bring something that would be a good community draw and place for people to come and be together."
Town Administrator David Smoak said the development will be an excellent use of the space.
"It's really going to be the first component of what our Town Center District is going to look like in the future," he said.
The push for a more social downtown district has been in the works for a while, according to Smoak.
"We want to see more retail and residential combined and a mix of uses so you can have walk-able communities, you can have an easier way to get around without having to use your vehicle."
Schaffer said working with the town has been a great process, and things have been moving quickly. In fact, the group plans to break ground this fall and open Farragut Gateway by spring 2017.
"I think once this project is up," Schaffer said, "the town will be very proud."
