NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Greg McCowan, a Blount County Sheriff's Office deputy who was fatally shot in February, was recognized by Governor Bill Lee during a ceremony in Nashville on Tuesday, BCSO said on social media.

Lee honored McCowan with the Three Stars of Tennessee Award. Shelby Eggers, a deputy who was also wounded in the shooting, accepted the award on behalf of him and his family. BCSO also said a contingent of deputies were in attendance at the ceremony in Nashville.

According to the sheriff's office, the award recognizes law enforcement, firefighters and medical first responders who were killed or suffered a career-ending injury while in the line of duty.

"This is a beautiful tribute to Deputy McCowan and his family," said Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong on social media. "Although nothing can assuage the grief Deputy McCowan's family continues to experience since his tragic death, this recognition by the State of Tennessee is remarkable in that Deputy McCowan's legacy remains alive, not only through his family, but for his sacrifice and heroism as well."

Lee also honored Tucker Blakely, a Knox County deputy who was fatally shot in October 2023, with the same award.
