FAA awards $14.9 million grant to McGhee Tyson for runway project

The work is needed to make the airport completely compliant with FAA standards and to compete in the aviation industry.

Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) just got a big boost to help pay for its ongoing upgrade of its runway systems.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded TYS a $14.9 million award for infrastructure improvements.

The airport is three years into a massive six-year plan to completely upgrade and renovate the runway system, some of which dates back to the original planning from the 1930's. It's the biggest construction project in the airport's history.

Right now, one runway is completely shut down as workers give it a complete upgrade an extend it to 10,000 feet.

The work is needed to make the airport completely compliant with FAA standards and to compete in the aviation industry.

The airport is also holding a contest to highlight the project. People can enter for a chance to receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the runway and operations.

The deadline to enter is June 25. For more information, check out the contest entry page at this link.
