10Investigates: Filings show increasing six-figure compensation for East Tennessee Lions Eye Bank's executive director

Prior records, and the most recent IRS filings, show the executive director received a six-figure salary — around 20% of the nonprofit's revenue.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — East Tennessee Lions Eye Bank's latest Form 990 filings showed that the nonprofit's revenue in 2023 was around $1.9 million. Executive Director Valerie Stewart's salary represents about 18% of that number.

The latest filing with the Internal Revenue Service shows Stewart had $316,000 in reportable compensation, plus $23,000 in other compensation. That's about $20,000 more than the prior year — when she made $320,000 in total compensation.

A past survey of pay for local nonprofits shows that's thousands of dollars higher than what other nonprofit leaders make.

Stewart's daughter also works at the East Tennessee Lions Eye Bank.

The most recent tax form shows she was paid around $89,000, a reduction of more than $40,000 from two years ago. Around two years ago, 10News reported that she received a compensation of more than $132,000.

Since 10News reported on the East Tennessee Lions Eye Bank, the nonprofit moved from its old location on Alcoa Highway, near UT Medical Center, to a new location off Oak Ridge Highway in Karns.

Its Form 990 describes the nonprofit's mission as providing "sight improvement for cornea-related impairments." It also said the nonprofit processed 790 eye tissues and provided 544 corneas for transplants.
