Ribbon cut on new housing in the Five Points community.

KCDC along with mayors Rogero and Burchett participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday in Knoxville's Five Points community.

They unveiled the last of 17 family-style duplexes constructed in East Knoxville. The duplexes include six two-bedroom units in two separate buildings on Juanita Cannon Street behind Paul Hogue Park. They are scheduled to open in December.

Folks with KCDC say the new homes are vital to improving the community feel of East Knoxville.

"We are replacing the old outdated existing public housing units that were located in this community and are bringing back the community. I think the people that are moving back into these units also feel that the community is also coming back-- we are creating more of a detached feel within the community, we lessen the density within the community. I think we are creating housing that people can feel proud about," said Alvin Nance, KCDC executive director and CEO.

The units were created to replace some of the Walter P. Taylor homes.
