KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Visit Knoxville announced Tuesday the Sunsphere Welcome Center will officially open on Wednesday, Nov. 20.

The new welcome center is part of the second phase of upgrades to the Sunsphere. The Sunsphere Observation Deck will close to the public for final renovations from Nov. 4 through Nov. 19 and will reopen on Nov. 20.

“We’re thrilled this day is finally here to be able to offer this enhanced experience for our community and beyond,” Kim Bumpas, president of Visit Knoxville, said. “The Welcome Center expansion shows our passion and dedication to this iconic structure, and we can’t wait to welcome our visitors to the Sunsphere!”

Phase I of the revamp was completed in November 2023, which included painting the Sunsphere back to its original blue color. Phase II involved constructing the welcome center on the third-floor level.

The welcome center will enhance the visitor experience by expanding retail, brochures and information in a space overlooking World’s Fair Park, according to Visit Knoxville.

“I am so excited to share these renovations with all of Knoxville and the thousands of visitors who come here every year,” City of Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon said. “Thank you Visit Knoxville for having the vision to bring this new visitor’s center to life, and for ensuring this landmark will be here for generations to come!”

The Welcome Center’s new entrance canopy is topped with solar panels, which gives a nod to the theme of the 1982 World’s Fair: “Energy Turns the World.”

The solar component of this project was made possible with a partnership with Chroma Energy Group. According to Visit Knoxville, the interior of the Welcome Center features a wide view overlooking World’s Fair Park. It also includes a skylight feature where visitors will be able to look up directly to view the outline of the sphere.

The previous ticketing process allowed online ticket purchasing utilizing a QR code, where guests were required to meet at the base level of the Sunsphere at their appointed time slot. Now, the welcome center allows walk-up ticket purchases.

Tickets to the Sunsphere will be $10 per person and $5 per child (12 and under), $1 off for veterans with ID.
