City of Knoxville opening pedestrian zone in downtown

The zone will be open for the remaining weekends of the year, according to the city.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Pedestrians can soon roam safely in downtown Knoxville. The city of Knoxville said Thursday that the pedestrian zone will be open for the remaining weekends of the year.

Roads will be closed temporarily from Friday nights at 6 p.m. to Sunday nights at 6 p.m. Those closures include Market Street between Clinch and Union Avenue and Union Avenue between Walnut and Gay Street.

The city said the pedestrian zone will expand the footprint of Market Square and provide additional safe pedestrian areas during busy UT football game weekends and the upcoming holiday season.

Temporary no-parking signs will be posted in advance for each weekend.

Due to several planned events this weekend, the road closures will begin on Saturday.
