(WBIR - Downtown Knoxville) This weekend, a well-known Knoxville neighborhood celebrated its unique heritage and history.

The Historic Fort Sanders Neighborhood Association held its second annual homecoming Sunday afternoon at James Agee Park. The neighborhood is snuggled up right next to the University of Tennessee, across Cumberland Avenue.

Current and former residents of the neighborhood shared stories and listened to music and poetry. To many of them, neighborhood was the place they grew into adults.

"The Fort has been the, almost the soul of the city, as R.B. Morris likes to say," explained Stanton Webster, the president of the Historic Fort Sanders Neighborhood Association. "It's just been a home for art and entertainment in this city, and we're just here to celebrate it."

But the homecoming also offered an opportunity to talk about the future of Fort Sanders. Residents, new and old, also discussed some possible improvements to the neighborhood. People got the chance to cast a vote on areas they would want designated for revitalization and preservation efforts.
