(WBIR, Knoxville) - The iconic Knoxville playground Fort Kid isn't going anywhere, in fact it's set to get an upgrade.
Fort Kid, which sits next to the Knoxville Museum of Art near downtwon, was built back in 1991 by more than 2,000 volunteers. Now, 23 years later, the playground is in need of some updating.
Some smaller upgrades to the structure, fencing and landscaping will be completed by June.
The second phase will involve the community by creating a new volunteer committee "The Kids of Fort Kid." This will consist of young adults who used the playground as children and want to see it last for another generation.
"I really think that my generation really wants to have something to do, something to start stamping their legacy on in Knoxville. So it's important because the playground needs it, and we need it, too, as we begin our futures as Knoxville civic leaders," said Alexander Waters, redevelopment leader of Fort Kid.
