Construction begins on Gay Street Bridge

The Gay Street Bridge and Council Place will close for about a month according to the city of Knoxville.

Drivers will need to take the Henley Bridge soon so a water line can be installed near the Gay Street Bridge.

Work began on the the Gay Street Bridge Monday morning to prep it for a water line installation, but the city said contractors likely won't close the bridge to traffic for a few more days.

The bridge is expected to be closed for roughly a month once that happens.

A contractor is installing a water line running between East Blount Avenue and Council Place as part of the Blount Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project.

While the bridge is closed, vehicles and Knoxville Area Transit’s Route 40 buses will be detoured across the Henley Bridge.

While Council Place is closed, there will be two-way traffic on the section of Sevier Avenue just south of the Gay Street Bridge.
