Appalachian Electric Cooperative lineman killed while working on power line

AEC said crews were working to install a new service in Grainger County when, for circumstances under investigation, Nathan Potter was electrocuted.

GRAINGER COUNTY, Tenn. — An Appalachian Electric Cooperative (AEC) lineman was killed Tuesday morning after being electrocuted, the company confirmed with WBIR.

The incident happened near Cherokee Dam off Lakeshore Drive, according to the Grainger County Sheriff's Office. State officials said the incident occurred about 9:20 a.m.

AEC said crews were working to install a new service in Grainger County when, for circumstances under investigation, Nathan Potter was electrocuted.

Crew members immediately provided life-saving measures. The lineman was taken to Morristown-Hamblen Hospital but did not survive, according to AEC.

“AEC is a close-knit organization that doesn’t just provide power to our members and the community, we’re part of the community. Today, we lost one of our fellow AEC Family Members and this tragedy is felt by everyone.” AEC General Manager Josh Compton said. “Working as a lineman is a respectable and honorable profession. We mourn the loss of our colleague during this incredibly difficult time. Their family is in our thoughts and prayers.”

Potter worked as a lineman for over six years and leaves behind three young children and a wife who is a stay-at-home mom. The company said a GoFundMe was set up for his family. AEC is also accepting donations at their office.

Compton confirmed AEC, the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA and other local agencies are investigating.

A TOSHA investigator went to the scene.

According to TOSHA, investigators at workplace accidents and fatalities typically survey the location, review company records and procedures and interview managers and workers.

A fatality investigation can take up to six months to complete.
