CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Tenn. — Claiborne County Schools said it learned about a "possible incident" involving high school students on July 30 and reached out to authorities to investigate.
According to a statement from the school systems, the students involved go to Claiborne High School. It said because it involves allegations about students, federal and state laws prohibit the school system from providing specific details.
The school district's full statement is available below.
"On the afternoon of July 30, 2024, Claiborne County Schools administration became aware of a possible incident related to Claiborne County High School students. Administration immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Office, asking law enforcement to take the lead in conducting a full investigation into this situation. Because this involves allegations concerning students, both state and federal confidentiality laws prohibit the school system from offering any specific comments at this time. Claiborne County Schools would instead defer all further questions to the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office or to the Claiborne County District Attorney’s Office."
WBIR reached out to the mother of a student who was involved in the allegations. She said she was not able to provide a comment. WBIR also reached out to the New Tazewell Police Department for information. The police department said it could not comment. A statement from the police department is available below.
"New Tazewell Police Department is conducting an investigation but we cannot comment further."
