Morristown approves use of license plate readers for law enforcement

The total cost for these cameras is expected to be over $34,000.

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Morristown leaders gave the green light Tuesday to use license plate readers in areas across the city.

Council members approved a resolution allowing Flock cameras to be posted throughout the city as a measure to help solve crimes. Leaders said the camera system is similar to what surrounding agencies in East Tennessee already have in place.

According to Flock Safety, the cameras come with a variety of capabilities. including the ability to capture two or more lanes of traffic with a single camera, the ability to capture up to 30,000 vehicles per day with a single camera powered only by solar power and process car details such as color and vehicle type.

Documents about the cameras also said the company offers a "transparency portal" which details policies Morristown would have in place, as well as metrics from the Flock Safety system. It also said the technology has built-in systems to receive Amber Alerts.

The total cost for these cameras is expected to be over $34,000.
