CEO of United Way visits Knoxville with a mission to help people thrive

"When we talk about communities in crisis, it doesn't matter what the name of the town is," said Angela Williams, the CEO of United Way.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The leader of a nonprofit that serves millions of people around the world was in Knoxville with a mission on May 1.

Angela Williams, the President and CEO of United Way Worldwide, spoke on Wednesday to community and business leaders at a breakfast hosted by the United Way of Greater Knoxville.

Whether it's East Tennessee or Africa, Williams said the work of the United Way, its volunteers and its partners are all the same.

"When we talk about communities in crisis, it doesn't matter what the name of the town is," Williams said. "It doesn't matter the name of the country. Basic human needs are basic human needs, and they are cross-cutting."

The United Way funds partner nonprofits in East Tennessee and serves as a volunteer hub, matching community members with agencies in need of support.

"Through our global network spanning 37 countries and 1,100 communities, United Way connects partners, donors, volunteers and community leaders to tackle the root causes of the world’s most complex challenges while making a positive impact in the lives of millions of people," United Way said on its website.
