KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Music is a universal language, and children singing in the Souls International Choir are proving that to everyone who listens. The choir recently partnered with the Center for English to host a local performance.

The singers in the choir are children of those taking the center's English classes to help people who are immigrating to Knoxville from other countries. Some of the students in the choir cannot read or write English, but the center teaches those classes as well as many different subjects.

"We're teaching them to drive, we're teaching them citizenship," said Sandra Fugate, founder of the Center for English.

Fugate also said the goal is to help refugees and immigrants become part of the Knoxville community while also offering both transportation and childcare for their classes.
