KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Care Cuts was the eighth recipient of the Peace Award from the Rotary Club of Knoxville.
The organization, whose mission is to restore dignity to people experiencing homelessness, was founded in 2016 by Marti Baker. The nonprofit provides free haircuts, meals and clothing and tends to the needs of those they encounter.
"We provide free haircuts to the homeless and less fortunate each Sunday," the organization said. "Since our launch, we’ve grown to providing the homeless with meals, clothing, transportation, identification, housing, rehabilitation referrals and job resources as well."
The Care Cuts team is operated 100% by volunteers, the website said.
"Our team of volunteer hair professionals, cosmetologists, barbers, and salon owners provide the less fortunate with hair cuts, while our volunteer support staff provides the homeless with hospitality by serving them food, distributing clothing, tending to their needs, and most importantly, making them feel special by helping them move forward from homelessness," the nonprofit said.
According to its website, Care Cuts has given over 13,222 haircuts and 98,337 meals to those in need.
