A one-lane bridge in Knoxville was dedicated in memory of the late Donald Caldwell

(WBIR – KNOXVILLE)  A Karns bridge is now named for a veteran who helped preserve it.

On Tuesday, Knox County officials renamed the bridge on Coward Mill Road over Beaver Creek to the "Donald Caldwell Memorial Bridge."

In the late 1980s, Caldwell helped organize an effort to preserve the historic bridge. It's one of only five original stone arch bridges in Tennessee and dates back to the late 1800's.

Caldwell's family says the honor means a lot to them.

"It tells me that although he never saw any accolades or recognition for everything he did, it shows me that the people in the community really appreciate him and they wanted to do something," said his son, Thomas Caldwell.

Caldwell's sons also worked on the bridge when they were Boy Scouts.

Caldwell was an Air Force veteran who survived the Korean War. He died in May of 2014 at the age of 84.
