Bail bondsmen make arrest in West Town Mall

Two bail bondsmen made an arrest in public Wednesday, in the middle of a crowded West Town Mall.

Two bail bondsmen took down another man with a taser inside West Town Mall.

A shopper caught the bail bond arrest on video.

Two bail bondsmen forced handcuffs on the man, startling shoppers Wednesday.

"(It's a) very routine matter in the bail bond industry," Sean Sanford, general manager of Sanford & Sons Bail Bonds.

Sean Sanford was not involved in the mall arrest, but he said it looks like the actions of the bondsmen were legal, and part of the job.

"We utilize years of experience to do this," Sanford said.

Bail bondsman are allowed to arrest people who fail to appear in court after bonding out.

"If we feel like someone's dangerous, we call the police," Sanford said.

While they're not police officers, they can use non-lethal weapons, like a taser, which you can see the men using in the video.

"This is something that you wouldn't want to see when you're going out shopping, when you're going out with your family," Sanford said. "And I'm quite certain that if that bail bond company could've picked where to make this arrest, they wouldn't have picked West Town Mall."

Sanford says most of the time arrests do not happen in public, and are a lot easier to make.

"Most of the time, they're in really bad shape," Sanford said. "They're strung out, they're really addicted, and we've actually had them ask us, 'Can you take me by McDonald's and get me something to eat? I'm broke,' and I've spent a lot of money doing that for these people."

West Town Mall wouldn't comment on the video.

Knoxville police say they don't have any connection to what happened.
