KPD: Austin-East High entrance vandalized overnight, officers working to identify suspect

Footage shows a man striking the front door with an object, causing it to break. The man didn't enter the school after he broke the door, authorities said.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Both the Knoxville Police Department and Knox County Schools confirmed the entrance to Austin-East Magnet High School was vandalized overnight.

KPD said officers first learned of the broken entrance on Wednesday morning.

Security footage showed an unidentified male walking up to the school's front door around midnight and striking it with what KPD said appeared to be a child's scooter. The suspect didn't enter the school and walked east on MLK Jr. Avenue, according to the police department.

Parents received a message from Austin-East principal Rob Speas that stated the front door was shattered after a man struck it with "a metal pipe." The message also said a window was broken as well.

Efforts to identify the man who vandalized the school are ongoing, according to both KCS and KPD.

If you have information, KPD is asking you to contact the East Tennessee Valley Crime Stoppers.
