KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — AT&T users reported a widespread outage in the United States on Thursday morning that left them unable to make calls, texts or access the internet.
According to Downdetector.com, outage reports began to spike around 3:40 a.m.EST.
Customers still appear to have access to "SOS mode," which allows cell phone users without access to regular service to call 911 in an emergency, piggybacking off of other networks nearby to do so.
While AT&T has yet to issue a public statement on its official website or social media accounts, several users went on social media to post about the outage.
AT&T later acknowledged the outage on Thursday morning, telling NBC News some customers were "experiencing wireless service interruptions" and that it was working to restore service.
"We encourage the use of Wi-Fi calling until service is restored,” the company said.
WBIR reached out to several dispatch services in East Tennessee if they were impacted. As of 6:50 a.m., dispatch services did not report any major issues.
Knox County E-911 said people unable to call 911 on Wi-Fi can try calling the non-emergency number at (865) 215-1179.
It is currently unknown what is causing the outage.
According to CNN, the telecommunications giant encountered a number of sporadic outages over the past few days, including a 911 outage in some parts of the southeastern U.S.
Some Verizon and T-Mobile customers also reported network outages but on a smaller scale.
This is a developing story, we will continue to provide updates as we learn more.
