Athens auto supplier invests in $100M expansion, adds 200 jobs

ATHENS, Tennessee — Auto supplier DENSO announced its plans to expand the company's manufacturing operations in Southeast Tennessee on Thursday. 

DENSO officials, along with Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter, said the company will open additional manufacturing operations in Athens, Tennessee. 

"This expansion underscores that the state with the workers will win every time, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact these 200 new jobs will bring to families in McMinn County," Gov. Lee said.

The auto supplier is also investing $100 million into the project. The expansion also includes 54,560 square feet of new production space and renovations to existing area, the company said in a release.

“As a company that’s proud to call Athens home for nearly 30 years, this day opens another chapter in how we strive to provide great career opportunities locally while contributing to greener and safer mobility across North America," President of DENSO's Athens Facility Marty Deschenes said. 

DENSO began operations in Maryville, Tennessee in 1988 and expanded into Athens in 1997. The company produces a wide range of automotive parts and systems including airbags, radar systems, communication equipment and engine components.
