AMR offers free CPR training starting Sunday

Starting Sunday, ambulance provider AMR will provide a week-long series of free sessions to teach the public how to perform CPR.

The first will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday on a section of Magnolia Avenue near downtown Knoxville that's being shut down for Open Streets Knoxville.

Sessions also will be held at the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame on Hall of Fame Drive and at the Farragut Town Hall Community Room. The times both days will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Company spokesman Mike Cohen said an entire week dubbed the "CPR Challenge" is planned this month.

CPR can revive someone if they suddenly fall unconscious and stop breathing.

Participants, in about 15 minutes, can learn compression only CPR and pediatric compression only CPR, according to Cohen. They also can learn how to use a defibrillator, a device that provides an electric shock to restart the heart.

AMR offers ambulance service in Knox and Blount counties. They're partnering with Knoxville Fire Department on the challenge.

Participants only need to appear within the designated times to undergo the training.

Four sessions will be offered Tuesday, May 23: at the Rural/Metro fire station on Lena Lane off Emory Road 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; at Pellissippi State's Hardin Valley campus at the College Center, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; at Pellissippi State's Blount County campus in the common area, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at West Town Mall in front of J.C. Penney's.

Two sessions will be offered Wednesday, May 24: 9 a.m. to noon at the Knox County Health Department on Dameron Avenue and 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Turkey Creek shopping center parking lot near Abuelo's.

Three sessions are planned Thursday, May 25: 3 p.m.-6 p.m. at New Harvest Park Farmers Market; 1 p.m.-5 p.m. at First Baptist Concord in the rotunda; and 10 a.m.-noon at Concord United Methodist Church.

One session is planned May 26 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Farragut Town Hall's community room.

One session is planned May 27 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Market Square Farmers Market by the pavilion stage.
