Warning lifted for those in Kings Court area, Hall community after chemical spill at US Foods, AFD says

​The department said the smell of ammonia would not hurt anyone, but it did not want residents and visitors breathing in too much of the chemical.

ALCOA, Tenn. — UPDATE — (4:49 a.m.)

The ammonia leak has stopped, according to an update just after 12:30 a.m. from the Alcoa Fire Department.

In a post to social media, the department says the shelter in place warning has been lifted and cleanup will begin soon.

The department says there may still be fumes, but the ammonia levels are "not dangerous."

According to the Alcoa Fire Department, there has been an ammonia Chemical spill at US Foods. AFD is asking all businesses in the Kings Court area and Hall Community to shelter in place and turn off HVAC units. 

The department said the smell of ammonia would not hurt anyone, but it did not want residents and visitors breathing in too much of the chemical by circulating it into homes or businesses. 

"We are monitoring the air quality in the area as we work to triage the spill," AFD said.
