85-year-old man hit by semi, killed while crossing street in Crossville

Police say man trying to cross in front of stopped traffic on Main Street in Crossville was hit by a semi-truck Monday when traffic started to move again.

UPDATE, Monday, Nov. 20, 5:30 p.m.: An 85-year-old man died after being hit by a semi-truck while crossing Main Street/U.S. Highway 127 Monday morning, according to the Crossville Police Department.

Police said Vertie McNeeley was knocked to the ground and run over by the semi while he was attempting to cross the street.

He was taken by ambulance to Cumberland Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

Crossville police said the incident is under investigation, but no criminal charges are expected.

ORIGINAL STORY: Main Street in Crossville has been fully reopened to traffic after a man was hit by a semi-truck Monday morning.

According to the Crossville Police Department, preliminary reports indicate that a man was trying to cross near the court house on Main Street, or U.S. Highway 127. Traffic had stopped, but as the man crossed in front of a stopped semi-truck, traffic began to move.

Police said the man was hit and found injured and unresponsive when they got scene.

He was taken to Cumberland Medical Center for treatment.

The Crossville Police Department said the incident is under investigation and more information could be released at a later date.
