5 peregrine falcon trapping permits to be drawn in 2018, TWRA says

This year, TWRA says five permits will be distributed.

Five people in the state of Tennessee will be able to trap peregrine falcons this fall.

The population of Peregrine falcons, through state and federal conservation efforts, has recovered enough since their near extinction in the early 20th century, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. This recovery has allowed for a limited take of these birds for the use in falconry.

Before this year, only one permit was distributed. This year, TWRA says five will be distributed. The 2018 application period for the trapping of Peregrine falcons to be used in falconry begins in July and will end on Aug. 15.

Permittees will be notified by phone and mail by the first Wednesday of September, TWRA's website states.

Previously, Peregrine falcons were only allowed to be taken from countries located in the TWRA's Region I for West Tennessee. Permits will now be allowed statewide.

According to TWRA, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded Tennessee its first permit allowing the trapping of one Peregrine falcon for the use in falconry in 2011.
