Morgan County leaders honor sheriff who was diagnosed with cancer, dedicating month of July to him

July is "2024 Standing With Sheriff Wayne Potter Month" in Morgan County after commissioners made it official at a meeting last week.

MORGAN COUNTY, Tenn. — July is "2024 Standing With Sheriff Wayne Potter Month" in Morgan County after the county's commissioners voted last week to recognize the sheriff who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Leaders presented the sheriff with a copy of the proclamation on June 24, signed by several people including Brian Langley, the Morgan County Executive. Potter announced he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that had spread to his liver in May, and said he would continue serving despite the diagnosis.

"Morgan County Executive Brian Langley and Morgan County Commission hereby strongly proclaim Morgan County's support for Sheriff Wayne Potter, his wife Lea, and their children during this time of Sheriff Potter's battle with cancer," the proclamation said.

Potter said he hopes to have several more good months and years serving the Morgan County community.

"Morgan County is a special place to be," said Langley. "I thought this was the least we could do to let him know that we stand with him and his family during this tough time."

Another East Tennessee sheriff also recently said he was diagnosed with cancer — Sheriff Tom Spangler in Knox County. He also said he planned to continue serving in his role.
