10Listens: What's the purpose of a feral cat farm?

Many of you reached out to us on social media asking about the purpose of a feral cat farm.

A family is still hoping to get its cat back after Young-Williams Animal Center mistakenly sent it, a house cat, to a feral cat farm.

Two weeks have passed and the shelter says it continues to work on reuniting the cat with its owner. Many of you reached out to us on social media asking about the purpose of a feral cat farm.

The farm tied to the recent cat mix-up is private so we don't know the name but we did talk to people at Feral Feline Friends of East Tennessee.

They run a similar program specifically for barn cats. Barn cats are used in barns and warehouses to control rodent populations. They take in feral cats, care for them in containment for about a month, then let them roam.

"Once they are released after that four week containment period, you don't see them too much. You might see them when you put the food out but they generally like to stay out of the way," Sheryl Hogan with Feral Feline Friends of East Tennessee said.

The group says feral cats are different from house cats because they aren't social and tend to run from people.
