Law would put sex offender status on driver's license

(WSMV) -A proposed piece of legislation would allow you to spot a registered sex offender just by looking at their Tennessee driver's license.

The bill would require the licenses of registered sex offenders to be marked with those words over the person's picture.

"It's not my intent to embarrass them, but it is my intent that the public know they're a convicted sex offender," said State Rep. Matthew Hill, R-Jonesborough.

Hill pitched the bill in a House subcommittee Wednesday afternoon.

Currently, a designation identifies sex offenders to law enforcement, but Hill said he believes it should be public.

Some of his colleagues, however, worried about overstepping, ridicule and whether this might constitute an additional sentence of sorts.

"You have to show your driver's license to write a check, to use a credit card, to vote. And, you know, I've just got some concerns about it," said State Rep. Vince Dean, R-East Ridge.

Because of the concerns, the sponsor essentially pushed pause on the process. But he said he fully intends to work on the language and bring it back up for discussion.
