911 dispatchers received a call around 4:15 a.m. Tuesday from security at the former hospital, the release said. When officers arrived, they saw a silver Toyota Camry and three people at the front door of the hospital, one of whom had been shot.
Officers identified the man as 21-year-old Gregory Ballinger from Knoxville. He died due to his injuries, the release said.
The other two people present were taken to the Safety Building for questioning, the release said. They told KPD the victim was shot at a club called "The Vibe" on the 2600 block of North Broadway, which is very close to the closed hospital.
Police have responded to 30 disturbance calls at that location since mid-2016. 14 of the calls happened in the last five months and three of those 14 calls included a weapon, records show.
