How are the roads in East Tennessee?

If the roads start getting slick, the best advice is not to drive if you don't have to, particularly in the morning hours, but we know that's just not an option for some people.

Snow has already started to fall in parts of East Tennessee, and the number one question on everyone's mind is, "how are the roads?" So far, so good! We'll do our best to keep you updated here.

Before you head out, check out the WBIR Traffic Map for real time traffic conditions.

Crew are out treating the roads, which are looking pretty normal and clear across Knox County with a lot of people out on the roadways. Still remember to use precautions--stay slow and leave more room than usual.

9:00 a.m.

Temperatures are starting to drop below freezing, so if you are heading out, watch out for icy spots, especially on untreated roads.

Knoxville police reported that salt trucks have been dispatched to the South Knoxville area after reports of icing on several roads.

A TDOT truck was involved in an accident on I-75 North at MM 118 early this morning in Anderson County, and all lanes are back open.

Winter weather has closed all facilities in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and many roads.

8:15 a.m.

Still no major road problems reported in Knoxville as the morning commute continues. The main roads are wet, but not slick. Watch out for slick spots on bridges and overpasses and on untreated roads.

Across East Tennessee, we've not heard of any major issues on primary roads, but again, untreated roads may have spotty patches of ice.

Roads are starting to close in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as the rain has finally transitioned to snow.

6:30 a.m.

With snow flakes now falling in Knox County and surrounding areas, no problems have been reported so far across East Tennessee. Road crews have been out since yesterday pre-treating the roads.

The Knoxville Police Department tweeted that the rain is quickly transitioning to snow.

KPD wants to remind people that bridges and overpasses will freeze first as temperatures continue to drop.

5:50 a.m.

There are not many incidents reported yet, but a TDOT truck was involved in an accident early this morning in Anderson County.

TDOT spokesperson Mark Nagi said the department has crews in all 24 of its East Tennessee counties.

He also said crews have been out since midnight and "will stay on as long as necessary."

ADVICE

Obviously, the best advice is not to drive if you don't have to, particularly in the morning hours, but we know that's just not an option for some people.

State and local crews actively pre-treated roads on Monday, when possible, with a salt/brine mixture that's designed to melt the snow on impact.

The rain falling before the snow could have wash away some of the pre-treatment so be cautious if you have to drive.
