(WBIR-Knoxville) A bigger reach to help those who need it most.
On Wednesday, the Diocese of Knoxville and St. Mary's Legacy Foundation launched a new mobile expansion to help rural East Tennessee.
"It's essentially about taking the mission of St. Mary's hospital that has served Knoxville for 81 years and taking it out to the rural areas to extend the healing ministry of Jesus out to the poor and those that are unable to access healthcare in the rural areas of East Tennessee," said Sister Mariana Koonce of the St. Mary's Legacy Clinic.
The Diocese of Knoxville says the new mobile clinic will serve as a family practice doctor on wheels. It will cover 24 counties in East Tennessee.
Organizers say they hope the clinic will be able to visit each area at least once a month, but it depends on local needs. They say they hope to expand the clinic in the future and possibly work with Remote Area Medical.
