A Knoxville woman's idea 100 years ago gave birth to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

In July 1924, a group pitched the idea of the Smoky Mountains as a national park. This weekend, Knoxville will celebrate its pivotal role in making it a landmark.

One hundred years ago this month an idea inspired a movement. 

The result: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 

While the mountain range has long loomed over the region, the Smokies owes its status as a national park, in large part, to a group of men and one woman from Knoxville.
