GATLINBURG, Tenn — The Great Smoky Mountains National Park announced that Newfound Gap Road will be closed because it is mostly covered in ice.
A Winter Weather Advisory was in effect for the mountains with accumulating snow expected across the higher elevations Tuesday evening. The National Weather Service Morristown also reported several inches of snow fell in the mountains and across portions of northeast Tennessee on Tuesday.
Newfound Gap is over 5,000 feet in elevation and NPS said conditions are unsafe for plow trucks.
The road will remain closed until temperatures increase and staff can safely address weather impacts, NPS said.
The National Weather Service forecasts rain turning to snow Wednesday night along with a wind advisory.
