GSMNP: 10-acre wildfire reported near Hannah Mountain, no structures threatened

The fire began Monday, according to Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials.

Great Smoky Mountains Natl. Park — UPDATE (8/28 12:50 p.m.):  GSMNP officials report that the fire is estimated to have expanded to about 10 acres as of noon on Aug, 27. No structures have been threatened. 

Aviation support has been issued by the Tennessee National Guard. Guard members will continue to support firefighters and provide additional aerial and ground attack resources. Resources arrived Wednesday morning and will continue to over the next several days. 

These resources include: 

  • Type 3 Incident Commander.
  • 3 Suppression Modules (7-10 personnel each).
  • 1 Type 3 Helicopter.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation provided a flyover Tuesday to assist with mapping and monitoring efforts. All areas formerly closed will remain closed due to potential danger.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

PREVIOUS (8/27 9:16 a.m.): Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials confirmed an estimated 2-acre fire near Hannah Mountain Tuesday morning. 

The fire began Monday and is not threatening any structures. Aerial and ground initial attack resources were ordered, GSMNP officials said.

The following areas are closed due to the fire: 

  • Parson Branch Road
  • Rabbit Creek Trail from Abrams Creek to Cades Cove
  • Hannah Mountain Trail from Parson Branch Road to Little Bottom Trail
  • Backcountry campsites 14, 15 and 16
