Knoxville — The Tennessee Theatre, Beck Cultural Exchange Center and Knoxville Area Urban League have partnered to to host a free event in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the 55th anniversary of the desegregation of the Tennessee Theatre.

The event titled "What Real Courage Is," will take place on Sunday, April 15 at the historic Tennessee Theatre on Gay Street in Downtown Knoxville.

There will be a civil rights panel beginning at 3 p.m. and a film screening of "To Kill a Mockingbird" immediately following the discussion.

The panel will discuss the environment of Knoxville in the mid-1960s when "To Kill a Mockingbird" was being shown in theaters. Another topic will be on the perspective and insights from today's African American youth.

"This panel discussion offers an opportunity to learn about the past, while viewing it through today's lens," said Becky Hancock, executive director of the Historic Tennessee Theatre Foundation.

Featured panelists will include Bob Booker, Katy Jeffers, and Quineka Moten. Phyllis Y. Nichols, president and CEO of the Knoxville Area Urban League, will moderate the panel.
