KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee said Thursday it received 49,248 applications ahead of the Nov. 1 early action deadline, which effectively guarantees admission to the highest-performing students in high schools across the state. Around 17,500 students have been admitted so far — 10,394 of them are from out of state.
The university also said it received around 10,000 more applications compared to last November. Administrators said it was the most competitive applicant pool in UT history so far.
The students admitted during early action had between 28 and 32 on their ACT exam, a test with a maximum score of 36. Students also had between a 4.12 and 4.5 GPA in high school.
Students had the chance to see early action decisions in their online admission portals on Wednesday.
The deadline for regular admission applications passed on Dec. 15. By that deadline, UT said it received a total of 57,278 applications — an increase of around 9,100 compared to December 2022. Around 22.8% of them are from in-state students.
UT is expected to release admission decisions for students who applied by Dec. 15 in late February. UT said it expects to announce a waitlist when those decisions are announced.
