KNOXVILLE, Tenn — The University of Tennessee said its student population is continuing to grow, after setting enrollment records for the fifth consecutive year.
A release said it saw a record 59,764 first-year applications, including 13,515 in-state applications. Both of those numbers represent increases compared to the previous year. A total of 6,804 first-year students began their freshman year of college at UT this year. The university said 4,348 first-year students are from Tennessee — a new record for in-state student enrollment.
The release also said around 16.7% of incoming students are first-generation college students.
UT also said around 74% of students graduated in six years. It needs to report the six-year graduation rate to federal and state agencies. The school's four-year graduation rate was at 62%, setting another UT record.
It also said around 91.9% of first-year students decided to return to UT for their sophomore year, indicating a growing retention rate.
