KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee celebrated renaming the Baker Center on Friday. It is now known as the "Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs."
The school previously acted as a leader in public policy research and education. It routinely hosts speakers on a variety of topics, helping facilitate discussion around contemporary issues and politics.
The new school offers undergraduate students the option of majoring in public affairs, and graduate students can pursue a master's degree in public policy or public administration.
"It's home to the new Institute for American Civics," said Chancellor Donde Plowman.
That institute is an effort by Governor Bill Lee, state representatives and local leaders. It was included in a law that also requires UT to submit a report to legislators and the governor about "opportunities and challenges in civic education and engagement in Tennessee."
