The Knox County Sheriff's Office walked community members through key internet safety measures they should know as school starts.

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — Knox County students head back to school next week with almost a third of the entire system online. Here is how law enforcement said parents can help you keep their kids safe.

Chromebook questions/answers from KCSO:

What about the chat function on KCS laptops? Can that be overlooked?
KCSO said the chat function can be restricted and monitored by teachers.

What about social media sites?
KCSO said technically high school students have access but it is filtered out for Kindergarten through 8th.

Safety tips:

  • Don't forget about parental controls and restrictions. There are tools that will help you do that.
  • Communication is key. Set rules with guidelines for what you expect.
  • Watch out for chat options on certain games.
  • Know what apps are being used and how they work. Many have functions you wouldn't readily know about.
