East Tennessee veteran identifying graves at historically black cemetery

Two years ago, Zack Taylor uncovered over 400 graves and now he's figuring out who they are.

Zack Taylor identified 175 of the more than 400 graves he and other volunteers from Youngs AME Zion Church uncovered years ago.

"I started looking up records and putting the pieces together," Taylor said.

Taylor served in the United States Air Force for 20 years before spending 12 years as a state guard in Tennessee.

"I fell in love with this genealogy search a long time ago," he said.

Last year, WBIR caught up with Taylor as he worked to clean the cemetery and pull up some of the existing headstones.

But on Saturday, he said he's on a different mission.

Since then, Taylor created an alphabetical index of each person he's identified. He's even gone as far as to start digging up some of their stories.

"This right here is the history of the community," Taylor said.

A number of the graves belong to veterans of the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam and the Korean War.

Taylor is 74 years old and while he's spent many years looking into the history of people buried in New Market, he'll tell you he does it because it loves to.

He continues to work with local funeral homes to ensure the newly identified graves get a proper headstone.

"When I got in here I just felt like I was called to do it," Taylor said.
