The Tennessee Highway Patrol said it arrested a fleeing felon who had assumed a different identity after stealing a police car and escaping the Fentress County Jail.

According to THP, Trooper Douglas Foster pulled a vehicle over on Interstate 40 in Putnam County on Thursday, March 5.

When he interview the driver and passenger, he said he noticed signs of deception from both -- saying the female passenger gave a name and date of birth that was not on file.

Troopers were granted consent to search the vehicle, and said they found an ID card being to the woman. THP said she was later identified as Stephanie Briggs, 32, from Nashville, Tennessee.

After doing an extensive investigation, THP said they discovered Briggs had assumed the identity of another person. She was wanted out of Fentress and Putnam County for failure to appear in court for charges of theft, jail escape, aggravated assault, assaulting an officer, and other offenses related to her escape from the Fentress County Sheriff's Office jail in 2019.

Briggs stole a police car during the escape, according to THP.
