KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A woman died after being hit by gunfire from a neighboring apartment in West Knoxville, according to the Knoxville Police Department.
Police said it happened in the Third Creek area at an apartment complex on Saint Francis Way.
According to the police report, officers initially went there for a person who had possibly fallen and hit their head. The report said the doctors at UT Medical only found out the 40-year-old woman had been shot from head scans that showed the bullet.
Police responded Saturday around 9:45 p.m. to the apartment complex and found a woman, identified as 40-year-old Cynthia Brown, suffering from severe head trauma. Medical personnel later discovered she had been shot after she arrived at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Brown was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m. Sunday.
Police said they investigated and found the bullet came from a handgun in an apartment near the victim's apartment. KPD said the person suspected of firing the gun was detained and questioned by detectives, the suspect told the police that his 9 mm handgun discharged from the adjacent unit.
WBIR stopped by the apartment complex seeking a comment, but no one was there.
"KPD remains in contact with the Knox County District Attorney’s Office, who will make a determination regarding charges and prosecution," police said.
