KPD identifies suspect in West Knoxville bank robbery, now facing charges

The armed suspect robbed Truist Bank at 4931 Kingston Pike around 1:15 p.m. Monday, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — UPDATE: The Knoxville Police Department said the suspect from the bank robbery on Kingston Pike has been identified, located and detained with charges pending. 

A federal criminal complaint identified the suspect as Steven Herbert Herman and charged him with using a gun to rob a bank. It accused Herman of entering the bank at around 1:04 p.m. and approaching the teller counter. It said he handed over a white piece of paper that said, "This is a robbery, stay calm, I have a gun."

It demanded $10,000 in specific denominations, according to the complaint. It said when the teller looked up, he was showing a gun in his right hand. The teller than started getting money from the bottom drawer, and went to unlock the top drawer. It said Herman told the teller not to open it.

It accused Herman of demanding the teller return the note along with the money before leaving the bank. The teller told authorities that the bank lost $850, according to the complaint.

The Knoxville Police Department and the Knoxville FBI Field Office are investigating a bank robbery that happened Monday in West Knoxville. 

At around 1:15 p.m., an armed male entered the Truist Bank at 4931 Kingston Pike and handed a note to the teller demanding cash, according to KPD. 

The teller complied and the suspect left on foot, traveling eastbound. Police are still working to identify the suspect, KPD said.
