Third person pleads guilty in Zach Munday's death, says he's guilty of accessory after the fact

The Gibbs High School 15-year-old died in late May after suffering a fatal head injury while at a house party.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A third person pleaded guilty in Knox County Criminal Court on Thursday to charges related to the May death of 15-year-old Zach Munday.

Noel Armenta Leyva, 19, appeared before Judge Scott Green and pleaded guilty to class E felony of accessory after the fact.

He also agreed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge related to furnishing alcohol to a minor and having a fake ID.

He is a student at ETSU but graduated from Gibbs High School in 2018.

Leyva's parents were out of town Memorial Day weekend when the young man hosted friends from Gibbs High School at his house to celebrate the end of the school year and to remember a classmate who had just died, according to the Knox County District Attorney's Office.

It was outside the Leyva house where Zach Munday and new Gibbs graduate Isaiah Brooks got into a physical altercation. They'd been drinking at the party and were intoxicated, according to prosecutors.

People at the party were mindful that there was underage drinking going on, according to the prosecution.

The state said Brooks, 18, slammed Munday onto the concrete. They report he and another friend, Chelsea Hopson, 18, did not seek immediate medical attention for the boy, resulting in Munday's death.

In August, Brooks pleaded guilty to the class D felony of reckless homicide and Hopson pleaded guilty to class E felony of accessory after the fact in Munday's death.

Leyva, Brooks, and Hopson are set to appear in court at 1 p.m. on Nov. 1 for sentencing. They're seeking diversion.

Friends and loved ones remembered Munday as a beacon of sunshine who was outgoing and always ready to help when needed.
